Wedding Gifts for the Couple: What Pakistani Families Actually Give

Every Pakistani wedding produces the same conversation in the car on the way to the hall: "What are we giving them?" Someone suggests an envelope, someone else says an envelope is too impersonal, and by the time you arrive the answer is an envelope.

There is nothing wrong with that. Salami is the backbone of Pakistani wedding gifting and nobody ever complained about receiving it. But if you are close enough to the couple that you want to give them something they will actually keep — something with both their names on it, from you — the choice gets harder, because a gift for a couple has to work for two people and one new household at once.

This guide covers what Pakistani families actually give a newly married couple, where a personalised gift fits alongside the cash and the household items, what a sensible budget looks like at each level, and how far ahead to order in wedding season.

What Pakistani families actually give the couple

It helps to know what else is arriving, so your gift does not end up as the fourth of its kind.

  • Cash (salami). By far the most common gift, from almost every guest. Practical, expected, and completely forgotten within a month — nobody remembers which envelope was whose.
  • Gold and jewellery. Usually from the closest family on both sides, and usually given to the bride. It is its own category with its own expectations and this guide does not try to compete with it.
  • Household items. Dinner sets, bedding, crockery and small appliances, typically from relatives who want to help the couple set up. Useful, but the couple often receive several of the same thing.
  • Clothing. Suit lengths and joras exchanged between the families, largely governed by custom rather than choice.
  • Keepsakes for the two of them. The smallest category, and the one with the most room. A photo frame, a lamp, a pair of mugs, a sign with their names — things that are about the marriage rather than the household.

That last group is where a personalised gift earns its place. It is not replacing salami or gold; it is the one gift in the pile that has their names and the date on it.

Give to both of them, not one

The most common mistake with couple gifts is giving something that is really for the bride with the groom's name added as an afterthought. A good couple gift is one both of them would pick up — which usually means it lives in a shared space rather than a handbag or a pocket.

Useful test: would the groom's friends and the bride's friends both look at it and think it was meant for them? Matching mugs, a bedside lamp with both names, a framed wedding photo and a name sign for the room all pass. A name necklace does not, however lovely it is.

Wedding gifts for a couple, by budget

All prices below are starting points from our current range and move with the design and size you choose. Browse the full gifts for couples collection to see everything at each level.

Under Rs 1,500 — from a friend or cousin

A pair of personalised wedding mugs, from around Rs 899 each, is the gift that gets used most often afterwards — two mugs, two names, one date, on the kitchen shelf for years. Colour-changing magic mug versions, where the photo appears when hot tea is poured in, start from around Rs 1,099.

Personalised wedding cushions with both names and a photo start from around Rs 1,249, and table-top wooden photo frames with the couple's names from around Rs 1,199. Either sits comfortably in the couple's room without needing a wall.

Rs 1,500–2,500 — the standard good gift

This is where most single-family gifts to the couple land. A "Mr & Mrs" acrylic name sign runs from around Rs 1,550 and is one of the few wedding gifts that genuinely gets displayed, usually on a dressing table or side table. Personalised couple lamps with names or a photo run from around Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,600 depending on the design, and they are a good choice precisely because a new couple's room usually needs a bedside light anyway.

If you would rather give several small things together, our cushion, magic mug and keychain combos run from around Rs 2,200 and arrive as one set. The gift packs range has these alongside boxed sets.

Rs 2,500–4,000 — from close family

For a sibling, an uncle's household or the couple's closest friends, this bracket buys something with more presence. Personalised LED photo frames and lamps with a wedding photo range from roughly Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, and larger wooden name nightlights run to around Rs 3,800. A personalised couple thumb impression keepsake, made from both of their thumbprints, is around Rs 2,599 and is the kind of gift that only makes sense for this one occasion, which is part of its appeal.

Above Rs 4,000 — the group gift

When six or eight friends pool their money, one good gift is far better than eight small ones. At this level you can look at larger personalised photo lamps from around Rs 4,500, or a premium gift box from around Rs 5,200. Our wedding collection has the full range of frames, lamps and couple pieces, and the anniversary and weddings range overlaps with it for more options that work just as well on the first anniversary.

Which photo, which names, which date

This is where personalised couple gifts go wrong, and it is almost always a detail rather than the product.

  • Spelling. Confirm how both names are spelled in English — or whether the family would prefer Urdu — before you order. "Ayesha" and "Aisha" are different names to the person who carries one of them.
  • Name order. Most couples expect the groom's name first on a joint sign, but plenty of families do it the other way. If you are unsure, ask a sibling.
  • The date. Nikkah, rukhsati and walima can fall on different days, sometimes months apart. Decide which one the gift commemorates; the nikkah date is the usual choice.
  • The photo. Use a picture the families have already shared publicly — an engagement or mayun photo, or one of the couple with you. Send the original file, not a copy forwarded through three WhatsApp groups, which prints soft.

All of this is checked on the WhatsApp proof before anything is printed, but it is quicker to get it right at the start.

What not to give a newly married couple

  • Very large wall pieces. Many couples live with family and do not control their wall space for months. A frame that needs a nail and a drill often goes behind the cupboard.
  • A fifth dinner set. Unless you have checked with the family, household basics are the category most likely to be duplicated.
  • Anything fragile handed over at the hall. Gifts at the barat and walima pass through several hands and a car boot. Give breakable pieces at the house, before or after the functions.
  • A gift that singles one of them out. If it is a couple gift, both names go on it.

Ordering in wedding season

Pakistan's wedding season runs from roughly October to February, and every personalised gift supplier is busiest in those months. Personalised gifts are made after you order, not pulled off a shelf.

Printing takes two to three days, and courier delivery adds a few more depending on your city. The working rule: order at least ten days before the function, and closer to two weeks if the wedding falls in the November–January peak.

How ordering works with us:

  • Cash on delivery across Pakistan — nothing to pay in advance.
  • A WhatsApp proof before printing. You see both names, the date and the photo crop, and we print nothing until you approve it.
  • Two to three days to make it, then courier time.
  • A free surprise gift in every package.

If the wedding is three days away rather than ten, message us on WhatsApp before ordering. Name-only designs are quicker and less likely to need a second proof than full photo layouts, and we would rather tell you honestly what is possible for your city than have the gift arrive after the walima.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good wedding gift for a couple in Pakistan?

Cash (salami) is the most common gift, and close family often give gold or household items. If you want to give something the couple will keep, a personalised keepsake for both of them — matching mugs, a name sign, a photo frame or a couple lamp with their names and wedding date — works well alongside those.

How much should I spend on a wedding gift for a couple?

It depends on how close you are. Friends and cousins giving individually often spend up to about Rs 2,500, while close family and groups of friends pooling money usually spend more. Nobody expects you to spend beyond your means to match other guests.

Is it better to give cash or a gift at a Pakistani wedding?

Both are completely acceptable. Cash is practical and expected; a personalised gift is more likely to be remembered. Many guests who are close to the couple give salami at the function and a keepsake separately, before or after the wedding.

Which date should go on a personalised wedding gift?

Most people use the nikkah date, since it is the marriage itself. If the nikkah, rukhsati and walima fall on different days, check with the family which date the couple consider their wedding day.

How far in advance should I order a personalised wedding gift?

Printing takes two to three days, plus courier time to your city. During wedding season we recommend ordering at least ten days before the function, and around two weeks for weddings in the November to January peak.

Can I check the names and photo before the gift is printed?

Yes. We send an artwork proof on WhatsApp showing the names, date and photo placement, and nothing is printed until you approve it. You pay cash on delivery when the gift arrives.

The short version

Let the envelopes and the dinner sets arrive from everyone else. If you want your gift to be the one still on the shelf in five years, give both of them something with both names and the nikkah date on it, keep it small enough for a shared room, check the spelling twice, and order it ten days out.
